About Us
Humboldt Waste Management Authority (HWMA) is a public agency called a Joint Powers Authority. Our members include the County of Humboldt and the cities of Arcata, Blue Lake, Eureka, Ferndale, and Rio Dell. HWMA is governed by a six member Board of Directors made up of elected officials from each member agency.
HWMA was formed in 1997 for the purposes of economically coordinating the disposal of over 90,000 tons of solid waste generated annually in Humboldt County.
HWMA’s Transfer Station, located at 1059 W. Hawthorne Street in Eureka, includes a solid waste tip floor where curbside and self-hauled materials are dropped off. Here, recyclable materials are removed, with the remaining tonnage exported as solid waste to out-of-county landfills. These landfills are located, on average, 175 miles away.
This facility also includes a greenwaste drop off site, a Household Hazardous Waste Facility, an administrative office, and a recycling center (the Eureka Recycling Center). The Hawthorne Street facility is located on approximately 4.3 acres of industrial land near the edge of Humboldt Bay in Eureka.
HWMA, in partnership with the City of Arcata and Wes Green Landscaping, operates the Mad River Compost Facility on West End Road in Arcata, where greenwaste is processed into compost.
In addition to operating various integrated waste management facilities, HWMA administers grants for household-generated Used Oil and Waste Tire disposal. Staff also administers fluorescent bulb, medical sharps and battery satellite drop off programs. Diversion programs are rounded out with community mobile events to collect electronic waste, hazardous waste and tires. HWMA also tracks Humboldt County waste diversion and disposal for AB 939 compliance.
HWMA also owns a 32-acre landfill that stopped taking waste in 2000 and is currently undergoing the process of closure.
