ACCEPTANCE AND PACKAGING
OF
ASBESTOS CONTAINING MATERIALS
The Humboldt Waste Management Authority (HWMA) can accept only non-hazardous solid waste for disposal. Non-friable asbestos containing materials (ACM) can be accepted with proper packaging. (Friable means able to be crumbled or pulverized.) Examples of non-friable ACM include ; transite siding and asbestos containing water and sewage pipes. Friable asbestos, such as pipe insulation, cannot be accepted by HWMA.
Non-friable ACM must be packaged in sealed, non-returnable containers including; cardboard boxes, cartons, or drums, with double plastic liners. The packaging must prevent any asbestos fibers from escaping during transportation, handling, and disposal procedures. It is required that reinforced duct tape be used to seal all seams, cracks or other openings in the plastic lining. All non-friable ACM must be double-wrapped in layers of .006 ( 6 mil ) plastic, such as visqueen or plastic bags. The required stickers and form will be provided at the transfer station and must be completed by the waste generator. Each container should have a completed sticker. The generator will receive a copy of the form, which should be retained as proof of proper disposal.
The weight limit is 50 pounds per container and no more than 5 boxes can be accepted from a residential hauler. Commercial haulers must contact us prior to disposal.
Commercial haulers please contact HWMA at 707-268-8680 for asbestos information.
Properly packaged ACM will be accepted at the Hawthorne Street Transfer Station during normal open hours. Upon arrival, notify the scale staff and the transfer station staff that you have non-friable asbestos. The fee is the same as solid waste. ACM must be kept segregated from other types of non-hazardous waste, so that it may be inspected for proper packaging, and for segregation during the disposal process.
If you have any questions regarding this policy, please feel free to contact our office at (707) 268-8680.
