One of the main benefits of fluorescent lighting is the associated energy savings. A fluorescent lamp normally offers a 25-35% savings in energy use compared to an incandesant bulb, according to the US Department of Energy.
Another benefit of fluorescent bulbs is their increased life span. On average a traditional incandescent bulb may last between 800 to 1,500 hours. However, fluorescent lamps may last up to 10,000 hours or more.
Unfortunately Flourescent Tubes and Compact Fluorescent Bulbs contain small amounts of Mercury, which is banned from trash or recycling. The HWMA Fluorescent Bulb Recycling Program allows residents to drop off of up to 10 home-generated fluorescent bulbs for free at several conveniant locations around the county.
Businesses can make an appointment to dispose of fluorescent tubes and bulbs by calling the Hazardous Waste Hotline at (707) 441-2005:
