Food Waste

Welcome! 'Like' us on Facebook for periodic updates!
Humboldt Waste Management Authority (HWMA) has partnered with City of Eureka, PG&E, Arcata Garbage, and Recology to figure how to keep food waste out of our landfills and generate energy by constructing an Anaerobic Food Waste Digester.
Click here for more digester details.
Food Waste Facts
- 23: percentage of food found in Humboldt County’s overall disposed solid waste stream!
- 187: number of miles (one way!) that Humboldt County’s currently hauls its solid waste to out-or-county landfills!
- 4: number miles that a truck hauling waste can go on 1 gallon of diesel!
- 70: percentage of food found in restaurant waste!
- 6: percentage of food soiled paper (e.g. pizza boxes, napkins, etc.) in Humboldt County's waste stream!
- 180: number of homes per day that can be powered by one truckload (12 tons) of food waste!
Food Waste Digester Project Benefits
- Reduce Humboldt County’s vulnerability to high fuel prices by stabilizing costs
- Increase regional independence!
- Reduce waste management costs over time
- Generate renewable energy
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
- Create compost and liquid soil amendment
- Increase local, “green-collar” jobs
Food Waste Diversion PILOT PROGRAM
We are currently operating a pilot program to determine how to get food waste out of commercial kitchens and into the digester! The pilot program will work with ~50 commercial sector "early adopters" in the City of Eureka to divert food waste from their current waste stream. Click here for more pilot project details.
