Tire Program
Residents are presented several options for disposing of waste tires.
Humboldt Waste Management Authority’s Transfer Station (1059 W. Hawthorne Street, Eureka) accepts tires from the general public throughout the year for a fee. Please call (707) 441-2005 for rates.
HWMA periodically hosts one-day Waste Tire Amnesty events. This program is intended for households only. Tires from businesses, including tires used on commercial vehicles and tractors, will not be accepted at these events. This program allows households to bring up to 9 tires, off of the rim, from their car or light truck only. Typically, two or three of these free events are held in various areas around Humboldt County each year. Events are generally announced on television and in local newspapers. Also, check back on this website periodically for upcoming event announcements.
A Waste Tire Coupon redemption program is open for a more extended period, allowing households to bring up to nine tires to the HWMA Transfer Station on Hawthorne Street in Eureka. This transfer station is the sole location that will redeem the tire coupons. This coupon program typically runs for six to nine months. HWMA encourages households to get the free coupons from any one of about two dozen distribution points located throughout the county. These coupon distribution sites include many city halls, community service districts, and the Hawthorne Street transfer station. These programs are for residents of HWMA member agencies only. City of Fortuna residents will pay normal disposal charges. Businesses are not eligible to use this program and instead must use a licensed tire hauler.
Between the Amnesty Days and Coupon Redemption Program, Humboldt County disposes of about 25,000 old and used tires per year. The cost of tire disposal is funded by an annual competitive grant from the California Department of Resources, Recycling, and Recovery (CalRecycle) and administered by Humboldt Waste Management Authority.
