Fluorescent Bulbs

Using Fluorescent light bulbs help our environment because they use less energy than standard incandescent bulbs. They reduce air pollution and green house gas emissions.  Additionally, they save money by saving energy… but fluorescent lights do contain small amounts of mercury and are banned from the trash or recycling bin. Humboldt Waste Management Authority and PG & E have partnered to offer residents a temporary drop off of home-generated fluorescents (CFLs and 4ft bulbs only), up to 5 bulbs per trip. This is a residential program only and is not available to businesses.

Businesses can make an appointment to dispose of fluorescent tubes and bulbs by calling the Hazardous Waste Hotline at (707)441-2005:
